    So I am from Scotland and working in Paris on the Olympics, staying in Saint Ouen and am looking for places to go on my day off, which is only Sunday. I went to Monmatre yesterday, absolutely rammed with tourists, however I found a nice quiet cafe in North Monmatre not far from the tube station you mentioned and that was great. A friend recommended Belleville so I will go there and also Battignolles is not that far so I will check that out. Thanks for the tips.

    The dessert with meringue, cream and fruit is called an Eton Mess and its an English dish. Its not panna cotta, panna cotta is cream set with gelatine, basically a cream jelly.

    Thank you so much for creating this video! Unfortunately, I don't have any friends who are born and raised in Europe, and I've always been SO curious to know what it's like to be from there/ live there. I strongly believe that the walkability of many European cities and fresh food/better diets, contribute to a much higher quality of life in Europe. But I guess at the end of the day, a lot of people's experiences in a country really depend on personality, job opportunities, and family/health circumstances. Social media really makes us believe that everyone else's life in another place is a million times better. I look forward to seeing more of your content and hope I can visit France one day!

    All I have ever heard is that the French hate tourists and can be quite rude and mean to them. Makes me cross France and Paris off the list of places I want to go to. That's ok. I'm good with that. For those who disagree, that's cool. Just not the place for me.

    I live near the Canal so I pass by Republique a lot. I remember some months ago when I was sitting casually in the square eating a Popeye's sandwich and next thing I know a protest crowd shows up and I'm now running from the police as tear gas canisters explode around me. But even if you like that sort of excitement (as I do) you still have the transit getting closed in that area all the time because of the protests. So still not ideal to stay if you're visiting.

    I would balance the Gare du Nord / Gare de l’Est comment a bit more for a few reasons. First, if you’re into South Indian cuisine, some of the very best restaurants are right next to Gare du Nord (thinking of Saravanaa Bhavan or Krishna Bhavan), as well as some of the best "cash & carry" supermarkets. Second, rue de Dunkerque, ie the main street connecting both stations has seen some cool redevelopment lately, with a cute suspended garden, and one of my most recommended cafe/restaurant in the area, ie the Café les deux gares, which imho has the best crème brûlée of all Paris (with vin jaune from Jura and hazelnuts from Piemont). There are other cool things in that neighborhood, such as the Marché Saint-Quentin, or pretty chill restaurants like Mamagoto, Chez Marius or even Hotel grand amour. The area to be avoided is really the street right in front of Gare du Nord, which has become a mess more so because of the insane taxi/Uber car trafic than its constant dodgy people. The street in front of Gare de l’Est is not as dodgy but a bit sad, it is one of the largest night bus hub of Paris, and so this is where you get to see the really poor working class going home every day, the people who struggle and who we so often do not even notice in our daily lives enjoying the perks of a wealthy city.

    • @notyou5594
      @notyou5594 12 годин тому

      Thank you for this comment! I am going to Paris tomorrow and staying in a hotel close to both stations and I am really not worried at all for my safety. It really is a convenient neighbourhood especially if you arrive late at night and since most tourists want to see everything in Paris, including me, I doubt I‘ll be bothered much by my surroundings in the short time spent at that hotel. Maybe I am a bit less sensitive to areas with big train stations because I live in a German city that is mostly known for having the worst main station in the country…

    Heeeeuuu, i am french, i used to live in Paris for 7 years, and i feel advising Belleville (place i like too) as 1 favorite place is clearly crazy. As parisian, it's fine (and was far better before), because it's mix of culture (asian and arabian), but for tourist what the point to go to risk to go there (not clean and can be not so safe), as it's not showing french culture at all. Same, i would fully avoid anything around Gare du nord, for 10min to 15min walk radius. Not safe at all. Especialy arounds stalingrad (as you well mentioned, chateau rouge, barbes, jaures,... My opinion is your adivses are nice for someone who will stay in paris for a while, and have time to discover "alternative" places. but for tourist, visiting for a week or 2, they don't want to take any risk. And the areas you showed are too much close to some not safe area (not worth to try for a short vacation). Again, it's not at all against you, and your choices are good. but not for tourist (at least beginner). Thank you anyway for your tips :)

    This is great information. Thanks. I'll be there in November and I haven't picked a spot yet. My wife will be at a conference, so I'm going to be mostly alone for a week, and want to make sure I'm somewhere that's nice to walk around, sit at a café or in a park, and relax. I've only been to Paris once before, back around Christmas of 2019, and we stayed a couple blocks from the Musée de la Vie romantique, though I don't think I ever even saw it. We definitely didn't visit. I liked the area, but I think my wife wants to stay on the other side of the Seine this time, just to get a different experience with the city. I've taken notes.

    I'm going to have to disagree on not seeing the famous landmarks. I was a tour guide in Paris and most of my groups did not have the money to ever come back a second time, and they had such a huge feeling of awe and satisfaction when they visited the Eiffel Tower up close, or the Louvre (and calling the Louvre touristy is ludicrous since it happens to be full of the best art in the world!). This woman and others like her that live there take being in Paris for granted.

    Interesting to see a native's 'real' take on Paris, to be honest it just makes me want to visit there again all the more. 🙂 There is something magical about your city even in the everyday life, and oh my goodness, the food!! That last dessert you showed, with the raspberries and meringue, looks like a sophisticated French version of the English 'Eton Mess', a very popular pudding over here in the UK. I'm thinking I might need to make some for my Saturday morning breakfast now .... I was struck by what you said about how the French don't talk much about work. That is certainly very different to the American / UK mindset, and personally I think it's much healthier. I grew up in the south of England and lived there for over 40 years, and work / life balance just doesn't really exist there for most ordinary working people. it's all work all the time, just to survive. A few years ago I moved back to my native Scotland, and I've found the work/ life balance is much better here, people don't let work consume their lives and every thought. May be something to do with living in beautiful landscapes, people want to be out and about enjoying things. 🙂 Your neighbourhood looks interesting and vibrant. ❤
